Label Review: Daptone Records 45’s
Greetings!
Welcome to our little space at Wax Off! Here we get to talk about whatever our proclivity regardless of who’s listening/reading. It’s a wonderful freedom I suggest you try it! In this space you can expect a plethora of music related information. If we see a particular release, show, or event that inspires us, this is where you’ll read about it. For obvious promotional and emolumentary reasons, there will be plenty of Wax Off content as we grow into our own. The blog will also be an opportunity for us to tell you about our favorite labels, bands, etc that we enjoy. So much music (and the hardworking people behind them) have inspired us to dive into this endeavor and we would be remiss not to share them with you!
One of those is a great soul label out of Brooklyn called Daptone Records. To date since 2002, Daptone to date has released 18 LPs and 45 7” singles. A few weeks back they had a sale on all of their 45’s and since it was too good of a deal to resist. I went from zero to completist in a matter of clicks. Buying 45 7” singles seems like a lot until they come in the mail in one box. Right when I cracked the top, the “woah” factor came into play:
The HUGE stack from the box was difficult to pick up all together. What really struck my initally was the simplicity. Other than a couple of exceptions, it was all white sleeves. However, that did not mean that they lack creativity.
Many of the labels are very unique, including special designs for particular bands (the green one on the top right for example is a Christmas single). The packaging is one thing but the real question is how do they play, right? Of all of the singles (I’m through 41 of the 45) I haven’t found a single “throw away” in the bunch. The musical energy and quality of these recordings are fantastic! A wonderful mix of upbeat soul that can get the most rigid of people to jump up shake their asses. This is a remarkable quality and incredible that it’s been so consistent over this amount of releases.
I couldn’t be more pleased with this collection and if you picked any up yourself you would not be disappointed.
Their records can be purchased conveniently on the web at their site www.daptonerecords.com.
Keep Putting Soul Up Daptone and thanks!
Travis
